John Harvard’s Brew House, a division of Boston Culinary Group, received two more medals for the trophy case at the World Beer Championships in
January 2009.
Maria Poulinas, Head Brewer of John Harvard’s in Framingham, MA., submitted two hand-crafted brews and both earned a medal. John Harvard’s General Manager, John Tarnuzzer, said, “There were both national and international brewers competing. We are very proud to win these prestigious awards. Gold in the Sweet Stout category is quite an accomplishment when you consider the competition. We beat Sam Adams in the Sweet Stout and nearly tied Red Hook’s flavored.”
The World Beer Championships, founded in 1994, is America’s oldest international beer competition and is open to all commercially produced beers from around the world, regardless of US distribution. It is a medal-based competition that awards its medals based on the proprietary blind tasting methodology developed by the Beverage Testing Institute (BTI) and bands of the consumer accepted, 100-point quality rating scale.
Poulinas’ Mobay Stout earned the Gold Medal in the Sweet Stout, Ale category with a score of 90 (Exceptional) and her Atomic Espresso Stout earned a Bronze Medal in the Flavored Stout, Flavored category with a score of 83 (Recommended).
Maria has been Head Brewer for two years and is excited about the recognition. “It really means a lot to be noticed by my peers,” said Paulinas recently. “The awards also confirm what we’ve known all along- our customers have very discerning palates when it comes to premium beer!” Tarnuzzer, said “We are in distinguished company. In 14 years, only 29 other Stout’s have won Gold Medals.” In the past, John Harvard’s has taken medals in the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup.
